Ah, the internet. A place full of endless information and all the shopping you could dream of. It’s a pretty great place, but can sometimes be scary, overwhelming and oh so misleading. It’s safe to say that we all know not to just believe everything that we read... But that doesn’t mean that we will all actually take the time out of our days to fact check everything we come across. So with that being said, I think it’s also safe to say that a lot more of us actually do end up believing what we read online than we would like to admit. 😬z

Don’t be too embarrassed now, we’re guilty of having done the same thing! But that’s why we are here today to debunk the crazy, weird, and just plain false, sick baby remedies you accidentally might have believed. After all, flu season is in full swing 🤒 And don’t worry- we already fact checked ourselves so you won’t have to!.

    1. "I’ll just give my baby some medicine"

Hold it right there mom & dad! This is probably the last thing you’d want to do when your baby has a cough or runny nose. The FDA advises against giving any sort of over-the-counter medicines for cold symptoms to children under the age of 2

    2. “Vicks VapoRub should do the trick!

We’re still trying to figure out who started that whacky trend of rubbing Vicks on your babies’ feet…. For starters, the box states that the rub is only intended to be used on people above the age of 2. Along with that, one of the main ingredients is Camphor, a waxy, flammable, transparent solid with a strong aroma. We’ll let you figure out if you’d like to keep up with this old wives’ tale or not...

    3. “Maybe just a little something to put them to sleep...”

Nope! When it comes to kids and babies, try to avoid sleeping aides. A huge number of sleep aides given to people are full of antihistamines: a drug loaded with dangerous side effects for children. The last thing you want to do is give your children drugs, especially if they're trying to make them feel better. Besides, it's gonna take a little more effort than one good night of sleep to cure a cold.

    4. “It’s doctor recommended... must be safe!”

Consulting with a doctor when your child is sick is key- but also is doing some of your own research on the matter to stay informed. It is important to fully understand what our doctors are saying to us when we speak with them about our children. But like us, they are humans too and can make mistakes… According to a study conducted by the FDA, single-ingredient codeine medicines, which are only FDA approved for adults, are being prescribed to around a million children each year; Codeine is an opioid and like any drug can have extreme side effects, especially for young children. Medicines aren’t always as easy as they seem… stay informed and always ask your doctor questions if there is something you are unsure of.

So when it comes to sick babies, always try and remember that less truly can be more.
Try keeping things as safe and natural as possible when it comes to a sick child, by going back to the basics:
A warm bath, cozy pjs and some all natural aromatherapy of course!
